• Someone owns HR. A tool this deep pays off when a person spends real time in it every week.

When is a small team better served by something cheaper?

The picture changes when the company is small and HR is a side job. Here's where a lighter tool usually wins:

• You're under about 30 people. You need leave, hours, documents and a place for payslips. You don't need workforce planning or position management.
• Your accountant already does payroll. If payroll is outsourced anyway, paying for payroll depth inside the HR tool is paying twice.
• You want to try before you talk to sales. Personio's pricing page sends you to a demo for a custom quote. Some teams just want to sign up and click around.
• You don't want a long commitment. Personio's yearly subscription has a minimum run of 12 months. HR FLARE bills monthly or yearly with no annual lock-in.

Personio's pricing page says it starts from €7.60 per employee a month, with a one-time setup fee that depends on company size, and the real price comes as a quote after a demo. Personio vs BambooHR: which one if you're comparing the two big names?

A lot of people search "Personio vs BambooHR" because they're the two names everyone has heard. They're more different than they look. BambooHR publishes its prices: $10, $17 or $25 per employee a month depending on the plan, and a flat rate starting at $250 a month for companies with 25 people or fewer. Its payroll and benefits add-ons are for US employees only. Every plan includes an AI assistant that answers HR questions from your company data.

Personio is built around European employers and doesn't list a full price. You book a demo and get a quote. Where it pulls ahead is payroll prep for European companies and handling several legal entities.

So the rough rule: a US team that wants payroll in the same tool leans BambooHR. A European team of 10 or more with payroll prep in house leans Personio. And a team of 5 to 30 that mostly needs leave, hours and documents may not need either.

What about Factorial and Kenjo?

Factorial is the closest thing to Personio at a lower entry price. It starts at $8 per user a month, you get a tailored quote, and there's a free trial that doesn't ask for a card. When the trial ends you choose a plan. It has its own AI features under the name One.

Kenjo calls itself workforce management software for small and mid-sized companies. Shift planning is in its entry plan, which makes it a better fit than HR FLARE if you run shifts. Pricing is per employee through a calculator on their site, and you can try it free for 14 days.

What HR FLARE doesn't do

We'd rather you find this out here than in week two:

• No wage tax calculation. HR FLARE keeps payroll records and payslips with gross, deductions and net. It doesn't calculate wage tax or social security and it isn't a DATEV replacement. Your accountant still does that part.
