A BambooHR alternative for teams outside the US
BambooHR is built around US payroll, and its phone support follows Mountain Time. If your five to thirty people sit in Europe, the UK or elsewhere, some of what you would pay for may not reach you. This page sets BambooHR's own statements beside a lighter option, and says where BambooHR is the better choice.
In short
- BambooHR suits teams that want payroll inside the HR tool for US employees. Its payroll add-on is labelled US employees only.
- Outside the US, four things decide it: where payroll runs, where data sits, when support picks up, and what the written quote says.
- HR FLARE is free to get started for up to 5 employees and flat priced after that. It keeps payroll records and payslips only, with no shift rota and no GPS.
- Neither vendor is called cheaper here. BambooHR sends international buyers to a quote, so the fair test is your quote against our price list.
Four questions before you compare features
A feature grid rarely settles this for a non-US team. These four cards do more. Each shows what BambooHR states, then what HR FLARE does.
1. Who pays your people?
BambooHR: payroll is for US-based employees. Other countries go through local payroll integrations (UK, Australia, New Zealand) or an employer-of-record service.
HR FLARE: stores payroll records and payslips. Your accountant calculates and pays.
2. Where does the data sit?
BambooHR: hosts in the United States, Canada or Ireland, chosen by customer location and needs.
HR FLARE: hosted in Europe, DSGVO-ready, full data export. No certifications claimed.
3. Who answers, and when?
BambooHR: phone support from 6 AM to 6 PM Mountain Time, Monday to Friday.
HR FLARE: email support from the Starter plan up. No round-the-clock promise.
4. What is the real price?
BambooHR: a US flat rate for 25 or fewer, a quote route for international buyers.
HR FLARE: a public list: $0, $29, $79, $149 a month by headcount.
Pricing: two BambooHR pages, two answers
BambooHR publishes more than one pricing page, and they do not say the same thing. All figures are US dollars, as BambooHR states them.
- The US pricing page lists a monthly flat rate for teams of 25 or fewer: $250 for Core, $425 for Pro and $650 for Elite. It also mentions a 15% discount when Payroll and Benefits Administration are combined with a plan, marked as US only.
- The international pricing page says plans start at $10 per employee a month, or from a flat $250 a month for 25 or fewer. It asks you to contact an account executive for a price quote, and states that BambooHR never requires an annual contract.
- BambooHR's FAQ says teams above 25 are priced per employee per month, with volume discounts applied automatically by headcount.
- Payroll, Benefits Administration, Time and Attendance and Global Employment are separate add-ons.
Which page you are shown may depend on where you are, so ask for a written quote in the currency you will pay in. We do not multiply per-employee rates by your headcount: for a plan BambooHR quotes individually, that sum would be ours, not theirs.
For orientation only: a team of 8 is under BambooHR's 25-person threshold, so the US page gives a flat figure, while the international page gives a starting price and a quote. A team of 30 is above the threshold, and BambooHR states no total for that size. HR FLARE charges $0 up to 5 people, $29 a month up to 10 and $79 up to 30. Put your own quote beside that list.

BambooHR is a trademark of its owner. HR FLARE wrote this page, so weigh it accordingly.
Which situation sounds like yours?
Eight people in Germany, an accountant runs payroll
You need leave, hours, documents and onboarding, and nothing in BambooHR's payroll applies to you. A tool you set up yourself in an afternoon fits. Try HR FLARE with a few colleagues first. It will not calculate your wage tax, and your accountant keeps doing that.
Twenty people in London, payroll on a UK provider
BambooHR lists a local payroll integration for the UK, so its payroll story reaches you through a partner, not natively. Ask for the integration details and the written quote. HR FLARE does not connect to UK payroll providers, so the question is whether you want those links.
Mostly US staff, some contractors abroad
This is BambooHR's home ground: US payroll in the tool, plus an employer-of-record service powered by Remote that BambooHR describes as covering 90+ countries, and contractor payments in 200+ countries and jurisdictions. HR FLARE offers none of that.
Hourly staff with overtime and location checks
BambooHR's time tracking states location tracking on mobile and overtime calculations for all 50 US states, as a paid add-on. HR FLARE has plain clock in and out with manager-approved timesheets and no GPS. If location matters, choose BambooHR.
What setup looks like
BambooHR says a full implementation generally takes four to six weeks. That fits a company with an HR owner, a data migration and a payroll start date. For a handful of people it is a long project. HR FLARE has one product in four sizes, and the free plan carries every feature, so what you test is what you would pay for. People lists in Google Sheets can be read in, and Growth includes help moving existing data.
Leave works the plain way: requests need a free-text reason, go to an approver, and feed balances with an annual grant or monthly accrual, carry-over and public holidays. Planning is self-service: each person marks their own week as working, remote, off or away, and everyone sees the team's week with approved leave on top.
What HR FLARE does not do
- No wage tax or social security calculation, no DATEV export, no filing, no payments to employees.
- No manager rota, shift assignment, swaps or open shifts, and no GPS.
- No blocking of leave dates and no cap on how many people are off at once. Managers approve, the app does not enforce blackouts.
- No employer-of-record service.
- A short integration list next to BambooHR's 150+.
What it does include: profiles, an org chart, documents, onboarding checklists, expenses with receipt scanning, e-signatures, performance reviews, announcements and messaging, job postings with a careers page, a Virtual Office view, a Mac app, an installable phone app, and an AI assistant that connects to ChatGPT or Claude over MCP.
Questions to put to BambooHR before you sign
- What is the monthly total in my currency, for my headcount, in writing?
- Which data center will hold my employees' records, and can I choose?
- Which payroll route covers my country, and who is the partner?
- Are time tracking and payroll priced as add-ons on top of that total?
- When can I reach a person, converted to my own time zone?
- What can I export if I leave?
If the answers fit, BambooHR is a serious product. If they point to a lot of effort for a small team, read our HR software comparison, the free HR software page or the Personio alternatives.

Where to go next
If a few of these lines described your team, make a free account, add three colleagues and run one real leave request and one timesheet through it. That takes less time than reading a quote. If it falls short, nothing is lost but an afternoon. Start free, or compare more tools in the HR software comparison. HR FLARE is a small tool for small teams, and for US payroll or global hiring, BambooHR is the stronger choice.
