A calculated calendar, not a moon sighting. Umm al-Qura gives a date worked out in advance. Months that start religious occasions, such as Ramadan, Shawwal and Dhu al-Hijjah, begin with the announced sighting and can differ by a day, and between countries.

How the converter works

Gregorian to Hijri: the tool uses your browser's built-in islamic-umalqura calendar. No date is sent to a server.

Hijri to Gregorian: browsers have no direct function for this direction, so the tool estimates the Gregorian day and then searches the days around it until one gives back the same Hijri date. If you enter day 30 of a 29 day month, it tells you so.

Moon sighting and the Umm al-Qura calendar

Umm al-Qura is Saudi Arabia's official calendar for government business and contracts, and it fixes the length of each month in advance: 29 or 30 days. Religious occasions start with the announced moon sighting, and the UAE, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar have their own sighting committees, so the actual day can differ from Umm al-Qura. For example, Ramadan 1447 has 30 days in Umm al-Qura, and Eid al-Fitr in Saudi Arabia was on Friday 20 March 2026.
