The rule in the UAE

MOHRE reduces normal private sector working hours by two hours a day during Ramadan, under the Implementing Regulations of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021. The reduction applies to all private sector employees, and companies may use flexible or remote work within the reduced daily hours. Hours worked beyond the reduced schedule count as overtime.

The rule in Saudi Arabia

Article 98 of the Labor Law, as HRSD explains it, limits actual working hours for Muslim workers in Ramadan to 6 hours a day or 36 hours a week. Normal hours are 8 a day or 48 a week. The reduction does not cover non-Muslim workers.

The English translation of the Labor Law on the HRSD site shows different figures for Article 98. The ministry's own page on actual working hours, updated in 2025, states 6 and 36, and that is what this calculator uses.

Worked examples

  • UAE, 8 hours from 09:00: 6 hours in Ramadan, 09:00 to 15:00.
  • Saudi Arabia, Muslim employee, 8 hours from 08:00, 5 days: 6 hours in Ramadan, 08:00 to 14:00, 30 hours a week.
  • Saudi Arabia, 7 working days: the 36 hour weekly limit brings the day down to about 5.14 hours.

Ramadan dates and the Umm al-Qura calendar

The tool finds the first and last day of Ramadan with the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calendar of Saudi Arabia, using your browser's built-in Hijri calendar. The month actually starts with the announced moon sighting, and the UAE and other countries have their own sighting committees, so the start can move by a day. In 2026, Ramadan 1447 began on Wednesday 18 February under Umm al-Qura.

What are Ramadan working hours in the UAE private sector?
Normal working hours are reduced by two hours a day for all private sector employees, so an 8 hour day becomes 6 hours. MOHRE announces it every year before Ramadan.
What are Ramadan working hours in Saudi Arabia?
