Does the Sharjah three day weekend apply to private companies?

No. The Friday, Saturday and Sunday weekend is a decision for the Sharjah government and its entities, and schools adopted it too. A private mainland company falls under federal law and chooses its own rest days, with at least one paid weekly rest day for each employee.

The government weekend and yours

Since 1 January 2022 the Sharjah government works four days a week, Monday to Thursday, with Friday, Saturday and Sunday off, and Sharjah schools follow the same weekend. The federal government and the other emirates take Saturday and Sunday.

A private company is bound by neither model. It can pick Saturday and Sunday to match clients in Dubai, Friday and Saturday, or a shift pattern. What matters is that it is clear in the contract and in the attendance system.

Mandatory health insurance since 2025

Health insurance used to be mandatory for private sector employees only in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Since 1 January 2025 it is mandatory across the UAE, including Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, and it covers domestic workers too. Employers must provide the policy as a condition for issuing or renewing residence.

End of service gratuity for mainland staff

Under Article 51 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, an employee with at least one year of service earns 21 days of basic wage for each of the first five years and 30 days for each year after that, capped at two years' wage. Get an estimate with the UAE gratuity calculator, or read the step by step explainer (Arabic).

Public holidays

Sharjah follows the unified federal holiday list, including National Day on 2 and 3 December. Under Cabinet Resolution No. 27 of 2024, holidays that fall on a weekend are not moved automatically, but the Cabinet can still decide to move a specific holiday, so check the official announcement each year.
